Ecommerce accounting — what makes it different

Ecommerce businesses have tax complexity that most accountants underestimate: marketplace VAT rules (Amazon and eBay collect VAT on your behalf — but this doesn't mean you're exempt from registration), inventory accounting (COGS vs capital), platform fees, multi-currency, and overseas sales. Getting these wrong leads to underpaid VAT or under-claimed expenses.

Ecommerce accountant — FAQs

Do ecommerce businesses need a specialist accountant?

Yes — more than most businesses. Ecommerce involves: VAT on UK and overseas sales (different rules); marketplace facilitator VAT (Amazon, eBay collect VAT on your behalf); inventory accounting (cost of goods sold, stock valuation); platform fees as allowable expenses; and potentially multiple currencies. A generalist accountant often misses ecommerce-specific VAT rules and expense categories.

How does VAT work for UK ecommerce sellers?

UK ecommerce sellers above the £90,000 VAT threshold must register and charge UK VAT on UK sales [VERIFY]. Amazon and eBay act as VAT marketplaces and collect VAT on sales below certain thresholds — but this doesn't exempt you from registration. Overseas sales (EU, Rest of World) have separate VAT rules. IOSS, One Stop Shop, and digital services rules also apply to some ecommerce businesses. [VERIFY current ecommerce VAT rules at gov.uk]

What accounting does Amazon FBA require?

Amazon FBA sellers need: income from sales correctly recorded (net of fees), FBA fees as allowable expenses, inventory/COGS tracking, VAT collected by Amazon Marketplace Services tracked separately from your VAT, cross-border VAT if selling to EU/overseas, and potential US tax obligations if selling to US customers through Amazon.com.

Can I deduct inventory costs as an expense?

For tax purposes, you deduct the cost of goods sold (COGS) — not the purchase of inventory. Inventory sits on the balance sheet until sold. This affects cash flow planning: you buy stock now, but only get the tax relief when you sell it. Correct inventory accounting is one of the most important aspects of ecommerce tax returns.

How much does an ecommerce accountant cost?

At RR Accountants, ecommerce accountancy starts from £250/month for limited company ecommerce businesses with reasonable complexity. Complex arrangements (multiple platforms, overseas VAT, Amazon FBA + Shopify) cost more. Exact fee confirmed after your discovery call.
